NIAD Art Center is a progressive art studio and gallery in Richmond, California, dedicated to supporting and exhibiting work by adult artists with developmental disabilities since 1982. Our vision is of an inclusive community where art makes the individual and their story visible. Frequently remarkable, surprising, and engaging, NIAD artwork has become a highlight of the West Coast art scene and has received recognition from the national and international art communities.

In a unique open studio environment, and with the facilitation of qualified staff, approximately 80 NIAD artists paint, draw, print, write, animate, weave, stitch, sculpt, compose, and perform. As they explore and express their creativity, exhibit artwork in galleries and museum, engage with the community, and earn money from selling art, NIAD artists’ sense of independence and self-esteem increase.

NIAD was founded, along with Creative Growth and Creativity Explored, by Florence Ludins-Katz and Dr. Elias Katz. The Katzes strongly believed that creative expression is inherent in all people, including those with disabilities.

The progressive art studio methodology was simple but revolutionary in the way it centered acceptance rather than assimilation of artists with disabilities. The studios give artists an opportunity to work communally during regular work hours; they push for accessibility and inclusion in the traditional contemporary art world: gallery and museum exhibitions, art fairs, studio visits; they resist the student/professor relationship in favor of “studio facilitators” who assist more than teach; and they establish a sales element where artists earn a commission from collectors of their work.

NIAD evolved from the “National Institute of Art & Disabilities” into “Nurturing Independence through Artistic Development,” as it is known today. True to the Katzes’ vision, the Progressive Art Studio model is now being practiced by hundreds of organizations across the United States, and internationally. NIAD Art Center remains one of the oldest and most innovative examples of this model.
