We will a feature two complementary series of new paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Helen Rebekah Garber. The first series is near monochromatic, figurative paintings made with thickly layered gray oil paint on canvas. The surface texture is visceral, beckoning the viewer’s touch. The geometric forms that emerge—shapes at their most rudimentary at times—recall iconography as diverse as mid-century Modernism, science fiction films, and tribal compositions. Here she continues her investigation into mysticism and spiritualism, through the use of mathematic patterning while pushing the limits of light, layering and the monochromatic. The second series of paintings are distinctly different materially yet they derive from the same themes as Garber’s thickly-layered works. Five paintings of oil on muslin over wood panel, measuring 24 by 20 inches will be featured, each with a background richly painted in a different color. The symbols depicted are the artist’s simplification and reworking of letters that spell out a poem, from The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.
Helen Rebekah Garber was born in 1975 and raised in New York; presently she lives and works in Los Angeles. Her work has been exhibited in the United States and Europe, including at the Laguna Art Museum, California; the Santa Monica Museum of Art, California; 31 Grand Gallery, New York; Bronwyn Keenan Gallery, New York; and Per Pio, Naples, Italy. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, Art ltd., Spin Magazine and The Frankfurter Alleingman Zeitung. Her work will be featured in an upcoming exhibition, Language of the Birds: Occult and Art, alongside Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington and Francesco Clemente, about mysticism in art at New York University.

Leonora Carrington: Her Life and Legacy

Join us for a panel discussion to learn about the recently established Fundación Leonora Carrington, AC and its role in supporting the life and legacy of this iconic artist. Carrington’s son, Gabriel Weisz, will share the mission of the Foundation and its role in preserving, and educating the public about his mother’s art work and their mission in supporting art therapy for the elderly in Mexico. Independent curator and scholar, Teresa Arcq, will discuss the importance of the Foundation and how she and other museums and researchers around the world are working to further projects. And the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) will discuss its current project, an ambitious biopic film, LEONORA CARRINGTON – THE LOST SURREALIST, which is scheduled to be released in 2017, the year of Carrington’s centenary. The panel will be moderated by Wendi Norris, gallerist and curator of two Carrington solo exhibitions.
