January 31, 2024 (Palo Alto, CA) – Qualia Contemporary Art is pleased to present Homescapes, the gallery’s second solo exhibition of paintings by artist Tommy Fitzpatrick. During his three-decade career, Fitzpatrick has continually studied and reinterpreted modernist architecture through his paintings. Paying close attention to the industrial materials and structured grid of buildings, he explores unique tools and processes for making paintings. He uses common industrial tools, such as trowels and spatulas, to allow for a more illusionistic and obscure effect within his works. The exhibition will be open to the public from February 17 – March 26, 2024, with an opening celebration hosted on February 17th rom 4:30-6:30 PM PST.
Homescapes is Fitzpatrick’s continued exploration of built landscapes and their abstraction. All of the imagery was drawn using CAD programming, focusing on a facade. This type of imagery is particularly interesting to the artist because of its iconic nature.
“The home as a built structure is such an important place for humanity. Something of a refuge or shelter, a means of protection and survival. Something people can universally understand, conjure, and project their own feelings and memories upon. In the end, these are images of houses. But I hope the viewer feels invited to inhabit the work. Metaphorically entering the image like they enter their own place of residence, even a memory of one they once knew, into a space that feels like the comfort of home.” – Tommy Fitzpatrick
Homescapes is Qualia’s second exhibition of the New Year at the former Pace Gallery space at 229 Hamilton Ave in Palo Alto, just three short blocks from its previous location on University Ave. The exhibition will be on view concurrently with Xu Hongming: The Form of the Formless. About Tommy Fitzpatrick
Born in Dallas in 1969, Tommy Fitzpatrick received his BA in Fine Art from the University of Texas in Austin in 1991, and an MFA from Yale University School of Art in 1993. He is Professor of Painting at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. Fitzpatrick currently lives and works in San Antonio, Texas.
Fitzpatrick has exhibited nationally and internationally including solo and group exhibitions at the Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi, Texas; Arlington Museum of Art, Arlington, Texas, and Dallas Museum of Art. Fitzpatrick has participated in several art fairs including Art Basel Miami Beach, The Armory Show (New York), Art Chicago, and Art Cologne. He has won numerous awards including the Winsor Newton Oil Bar Limited Prize from Yale University School of Art, given in recognition of outstanding work in painting and printmaking.
Fitzpatrick’s paintings are in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas; Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas; Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi, Texas; and The Menil Collection in Houston, Texas.
