Tom Bolles: Luminous

Sep 1 — Oct 1, 2021

Andrea Schwartz Gallery is pleased to announce the fifth solo exhibition by Tom Bolles.

“The large canvases displayed here possess as much of a glow and are as intense of a palette as I have ever employed” – Tom Bolles

While living in New York City in 1989, Tom Bolles learned how to work with neon light and began sculpting. Bolles exhibited his neon work twice in New York before returning to his main medium of painting. This new body of work references his earlier neon sculptures, where Bolles explores how to capture the luminosity of neon light in his paintings.

Bolles works by applying layer after layer of translucent acrylic paint, with his completed paintings often consisting of over fifty layers of paint. This application process creates depth and smooth surfaces featuring intense palettes that truly glow.
