SLATE contemporary is pleased to present GOLDEN DAZE featuring new work by Sheldon Greenberg. The exhibition will be on view at SLATE contemporary gallery August 6 – September 11.
The title refers to the contemplative lens through which Sheldon presents pop-culture motifs and an existential representation of California’s suburban landscapes. California’s iconic palm-trees make an appearance in pieces throughout the show, both silk-screened and hand-drawn, symbolizing an idyllic and glamorous ‘natural’ world that in reality can also be much more quotidian, as it is in California so often surrounded by urban development, freeways, and concrete. These new paintings employ all the tools in Sheldon’s tool- box, including photo realism, figuration, stylized hand-drawn cartoons, hard-edged taped work, pattern, silk-screening, architecture, suburban architecture, and gestural expressionism. While he is clearly paying homage to the artists and culture of 20th century America, Greenberg’s work still feels fresh, contemporary, and relevant in 2021 as he succeeds in capturing the optimism, anxiety, and irony that continue to characterize life in California today.
