Roni Feldman: A Passing Storm

May 5 — Jul 1, 2023

Viewing art is an act of contemplative discovery. Roni Feldman’s paintings in A Passing Storm, invite viewers to spend time with them- to move about, look closely, and become active visual explorers themselves.

These cloudscapes are made entirely with white paint over a silver ground. They appear subtle at first, but come alive with light as it interacts with the varying matte and reflective surfaces. As one moves in front of them, or sunlight changes the lighting in the room, the paintings vacillate between abstraction and representation, revealing scenes of liquid transformation: great waves, stormy clouds, avalanches, and billowing geysers. The paintings are grand and often full of movement and energy, but the luminescence and soft forms balance drama with serenity.

Roni Feldman is fascinated by the history of white-on-white paintings and how white light is made from all the colors of the spectrum.  It is everything and nothing all at once. To see them in their entirety takes time.  Day or night, these paintings always have something to be discovered. In raking sunlight they can feel bright and shimmering and at night they may take on a warm glow from incandescent lights.  Their mood is always changing, inviting reinvestigation, discovery, and comfort with change.

Roni Feldman holds an M.F.A. in Painting from the Claremont Graduate University. His work has been featured extensively in many solo and group shows both in the U.S. and abroad.
