The Japanese atmosphere of contrast and simplicity can be seen in this series of large-format paintings, in which color and the technique of collage and silkscreen play a leading role.
“My first trip to Japan has been most impressive. Touring the country from north to south, I discovered a world different than everything I knew and one full of contrasts; order and disorder, crowds and solitude, silence found in temples and parks in the midst of the great city. I left seduced by Japan’s landscapes and aesthetics. I have tried to capture the delicacy of that wonderful culture that blends the natural with the human so well: flowers, cities, trees, geishas, skies, neon lights, flower prints, and calligraphy. In Japan, the beauty of simplicity is ever present, even in the most cosmopolitan and technologically advanced city, and that is why I set my sight on details that I want to share with the viewer. Whenever I paint, I unconsciously live in the moment I am painting. The Japanese atmosphere of contrast and simplicity can be seen in this series of large-format paintings, in which color and the technique of collage and silkscreen play a leading role.”
Regina’ s loose, whimsical brushstrokes and bold washes of color lend her paintings an instinctual, child-like spontaneity that belies her sophisticated command of composition, balance, shape, coloration, and line. Singing with energy and vibrancy, her paintings capture the wonder and magic of life.
As with flowers and trees, in her use of newspaper scraps, Regina introduces pieces of her own daily life into her work. The touch of newsprint that comprises the houses of her native countryside–relate the paintings to a specific time and place, and serve as a reminder, no matter where they might be seen around the globe, of home. Refreshing in their quirky originality, yet profoundly symbolic, Regina’s paintings capture the brilliance and exuberance of the human spirit.
