Meyerovich Gallery recently celebrated its 35-year anniversary of Katz’s first exhibition in San Francisco, “Paintings, Drawings, Graphics”. “For that 1986 show, the gallery produced a catalogue that opened with this quote from the artist: ‘The ordinary is quite marvelous.’ Katz flew out to San Francisco for that exhibit and delighted in gabbing with fans who’d known his work for years, models from his paintings, and others who crowded into Alex Meyerovich’s Union Square gallery space.” (Jonathan Curiel, 2016, Pop Artist Alex Katz Returns to S.F. For the First time in 30 years, SF Weekly)
Following Meyerovich Gallery’s first Katz show in 1986, there have been several exhibitions of Katz paintings, cutouts and works on paper. The gorgeous red artwork “Ariel” had its first public viewing at the San Francisco art fair in 2016. Alex Katz attended some of these openings at Meyerovich Gallery and Alex & Alex have visited each other over the years.
Meyerovich Gallery’s current exhibition, “Alex Katz: New and Recent Works”, showcases an extensive selection of his most recent works. Color and light play a central role in his works. The subjects of these large to mid-sized works include vibrant portraits, dancers, human figures, multi-colored still-life and colorful flowers. These artworks are created by the artist using an assortment of complex mediums.
