Stop in to see this special small solo exhibition featuring very recent work by Sacramento ceramicist, Julie Clements, showing concurrently with our featured North Gallery solo exhibition, and more in our Gallery Showroom. Or check out our gallery on-line.
Clements draws on her fascination with animals, and their sometimes quirky characteristics, in creating her playful and punchy ceramic works riffing on all kinds of critters while tweaking our sensibilities, pointing out paradoxes or just plain having fun. Captivating in their fine detail and comedic gesture, each piece is a one-of-a-kind exploration of themes ranging from the very serious to the exuberantly joyful. For Mixed Tape, Clements delivered new work on the theme of toys and time gone by:
“This group of work explores objects from my youth that are now anachronisms. The mixed tape was a defining object. Organizing songs to imbue complex teenage emotions is a time honored ritual. Some of those objects like the playskool shopping cart were not so subtle ways of cultural conditioning. In “Put a wrench in it” I re-codified the object with the trickster squirrel monkey. Some of the objects “Captain Space Rat,” are purely whimsical reference from tin toys beyond my time. The use of toys and animals allows for playful and accessible imagery. Behind each piece is a personal and intimate world.”
