In HI VIS Jordan Holms’s new work examines how the built environment is materialized, organized, and made to mean. Mining sites that she encounters online and in the everyday, her new work unsettles the prescribed distinctions between space and place. In addition to a series of new acrylic paintings, the exhibition will include mediums that the artist has never displayed before, including carpet tufts and watercolors.
The artist states about the exhibition: In order to arrive at more nuanced definitions of space, these new works take into account objects that are coded in ways that produce space: decorative moldings; cement barricades; period furniture; wire fences; wallpaper; traffic signs; upholstery; pylons; venetian blinds. The things we find in our homes and out in the built environment that signal something about how that space makes meaning.
Jordan Holms (b. 1993, Vancouver, Canada) is an interdisciplinary artist who works primarily in painting, sculpture, and fiber art. She has exhibited in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Holms’s work was recently included in an exhibition curated by the Oakland Museum’s Carin Adams at the Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica, CA. Holms was also an artist-in-residence at the Vermont Studio Center in February 2020. She earned a Master of Fine Arts and Master of Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2019. Holms lives and works in San Francisco, California.
