Opening Reception: Wednesday, October 6th 5:30 – 7:30pm
Andrea Schwartz Gallery is pleased to announce a two-person exhibition with John Belingheri and Albert Dicruttalo.
“I do not mimic the natural world, but create uninvited, unexpected structures and textures that capture a sense of restrained complication.” – John Belingheri
There is a strong dialogue between order and disorder in John Belingheri’s work. Using oil paint and various other mediums, he covers each canvas with layers of repetitive marks and patterns that reveal a record of his creative process; collections, missteps and reductions of paint. Belingheri’s culmination of marks turn variability and tension into a dynamic space that pushes at the edges of the canvas before resolving into a calm meditation.
“My work of complex curvilinear forms, interlocking and cantilevered, evoke a feeling of lightness in contradiction to the metal from which they are formed.” – Albert Dicruttalo
As a teenager, Albert Dicruttalo worked in a leather mill in his hometown of Gloversville, NY and was fascinated by the shapes and scale of the industrial machinery. This contrast of giant wooden drums and embossing machines against the natural beauty of the Adirondack foothills left a lasting impression on Dicruttalo. In his new body of work, Dicruttalo references the juxtaposition of industry and nature, embracing the tension of their co-existence.
