Andra Norris Gallery is delighted to present a collection of fine prints spanning the five decades from 1974-2024 by American Realist James Torlakson.

James Torlakson depicts majesty in the mundane with everyday “Americana” scenes, from gritty suburban landscapes, traveling carnivals, standing fireworks booths, and abandoned drive-in theaters to autobiographical still-life scenes from his Bay Area neighborhood in Pacifica.

The realism in Torlakson’s work is oriented toward the sensuous consumption and reinterpretation of the real world. The artist is not interested in how closely he can mimic physical images, but rather in how he can change and distort them to suit his aesthetic.

Proficiently working in oil, watercolor, and printmaking, the artist employs European master techniques in his artistic pursuits to create compelling photorealistic works that have been widely exhibited both nationally and internationally. Many of his works are housed in the permanent collections of American museums, including the following:
