Maybaum Gallery is pleased to present Present by Past, our second solo show for Bay Area artist Foad Satterfield.
Satterfield’s recent work is a re-contextualization of previous explorations emphasizing bright hues, with singular physical stokes vigorously applied. For the past decade he has been interested in how to effectively consider the ever-changing environment in urban and rural settings through focused abstraction. Instead of capturing particular moments, his intention is to articulate on canvas the music and movement that animates life around him.
In this series of paintings, scale is required to honor and accurately present these pictorial dialogues and personal narratives that are direct responses to closure and isolation. By observing the natural world during long walks and being attentive what is present, Satterfield can reflect deeply on his surroundings and the world he inhabits and thereby allow what he sees and experiences to guide him. Allowing these interactions with his environment to impel him can intrigue or frustrate because he is lending his agency to a process of discovery. As he works he is aware that his task is primarily, through color, movement, and texture, to release preconceived notions to effectively express and reveal from his observations what it is that wants to be seen and known.
Foad Satterfield earned his MFA in Painting from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge and a BA from Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA. From 1980 to the present he works as a Professor of Art at Dominican University of California. A Bay Area artist for over four decades, Satterfield currently lives and works in Emeryville, CA.
