Erin Vincent – Contours

March 19th- April 17th

K. Imperial Fine Art is pleased to present Contours, artist Erin Vincent’s debut exhibition at the gallery, on view March 22 through April 18 in San Francisco at 49 Geary Street, Suite 525.

Erin Vincent is an artist whose strength is tethered in her ability to transform. Through careful, incisive labor, Vincent transforms common materials into exquisite and fascinating sculptures. What was once just tissue paper, becomes magnified. Bristles, pins, wood and paper shed their original identities and mutate into compelling new forms reminiscent of mosses, cells, animal skins, urchins, and undulating entities that transcend description and comprehension.

Throughout Vincent’s work, the concept of “less is more” seems to be simultaneously supported and challenged. While her choices in material and color may be simple and understated, they are arranged with utmost consideration and opulent detail. The end result brings about meticulously rendered works that are distilled, profound, and engrossing–seemingly capable of shouting and whispering at the same time.
“Rich in texture, the materials used often evoke a sense of the familiar,” says Vincent, “but are employed in such a way that leaves the patron questioning their original purpose. Having witnessed many individuals sneak a quick stroke of my sculptures I wanted to embrace this characteristic and explore how tactile engagement will impact those who experience my work.”

Erin Vincent (b. 1977, Canada) is a Toronto-based artist whose work draws on a variety of repetitive and labour intensive processes and materials. Things have always fascinated Vincent; attracted to the abject and discarded she de-categorizes them and removes established hierarchies. She explores themes of emotional intensity, intuition and the relationship between things. The sculptures she makes possess their own liveliness through heightened tactile qualities.

Vincent completed her MFA at York University, focusing on sculpture and installation. She holds her BFA from the University of Waterloo and received her degree in Arts Education from the University of Western Ontario.  Vincent has exhibited her work in Canada, United States and England, with representation by Christie Contemporary (Toronto ON), Muriel Gupien Gallery (NYC) and K. Imperial Fine Art (San Francisco). Her work is held in Canadian and International collections and she is the recipient of the following grants: 2021 Canadian Council, Research and Creation, 2019 Visual Arts Mid Career, and Toronto Arts Council and a 2016 SSHRC.

The gallery is open by appointment only. For more information or to make an appointment please contact kimperialfineart@me.com or 415-277-7230.
