Donald Bradford | Lazarus Paintings

Oct 6 — Nov 10, 2022

Opening Reception: October 6th, 5:30 – 7:30pm

Andrea Schwartz Gallery is pleased to announce the third solo exhibition with Donald Bradford.

“My Lazarus Paintings series examines the concept of bringing back to life themes that I first worked on over three decades ago—returning to them with deeper insights and life experiences, along with a more painterly and assured style.” – Donald Bradford

Lazarus, a biblical symbol of hope and rebirth, is at the core of Donald Bradford’s new body of work. Bradford revisits mythical narratives explored in the early years of his career with a fresh perspective. Themes include Icarus, Madame Butterfly, Jacob Wrestling and Irene, the Patron Saint of Nurses.

Bradford paints from photographs and live models, who he views as collaborators, providing their own insight and energy to his work. His friend and model, aptly named Irene, was first painted by Bradford in the 80’s during the AIDS Crisis. Now, using the same photos of her from 1985, Bradford revisits the theme of Irene in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With this body of work, Bradford wishes for the viewer to contemplate the importance and power of myth. Myths tell stories of common human struggles that transcend cultures and time. They can teach us, open our imaginations and help bind us together.
