David Bromley’s work taps into a world of fantasy and beauty, balancing bold and romantic elements in paintings full of life, movement, and color. His figures combine with abstract elements such as stripes, color fields, and shimmering gold and silver leaf, seeming to inhabit a space between reality, imagination, and memory.
Bromley’s sensibility is inspired by Pop art as well as vintage objects and imagery, particularly children’s books from the 1950s. These influences are visible in his paintings of childhood adventures as well as in his female nudes, in which lovely, fluidly drawn women, backed by soft washes of saturated color, gaze back at the viewer. Butterflies and flowers, quintessential symbols of beauty and pleasure, float liberally through his compositions, lending his work an ethereal, playful air.
Born in Sheffield, England in 1960, Bromley moved to Australia as a child. As a self-taught artist, he gained renown in Australia in his twenties, and has since become one of the country’s best loved artists. His work has been featured in Australian Vogue and Inside Out, among other publications, and is included in public, corporate, and private collections in both hemispheres. He has held numerous solo exhibitions throughout Australia, the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
