Bay area artist Amy Kaufman will present new paintings and works on paper which showcase her commanding formal abstractions in a variety of media including charcoal, pastel or paint. She builds her compositions with repeated patterns of intertwining curvilinear lines, explicit and implied organic forms, and irregular geometric shapes that float in the picture plane, often creating the illusion of three-dimensional space. Kaufman’s work is rooted in a working knowledge of art historical movements which offer ongoing inspiration from diverse practices such as Persian miniature paintings to minimalism to old masters. While observing a rigorous studio approach, she is also thoughtfully engaged with the world around her, from which she gathers the abstracted forms and shapes that appear in her work. Kaufman is a graduate of California College of the Arts and her work is held in numerous public and private collections.
