Alex Couwenberg & Jeff Metz: Urban Geometry
July 1 – July 30, 2020
Andrea Schwartz Gallery is pleased to announce a two-person exhibition by Alex Couwenberg and Jeff Metz.
“My paintings are a marriage between the known and the unknown.” – Alex Couwenberg
Deeply immersed in the creative process, Alex Couwenberg’s paintings reflect the relationship between planning and instinct. As Couwenberg’s work evolves through the additive and reductive use of line, form, color and space, he exposes intricate layers and movement that echo the visual landscape of his native Los Angeles.
“These recent sculptures represent a range of formal expression, and ultimately an extension of my previous focus, working primarily in stone.” – Jeff Metz
The purely subtractive art of carving stone is expanded upon with the incorporation of metals in Jeff Metz’s recent sculptures. His combination of stone, steel, and aluminum expose a new dynamic. The tensile strength of steel and aluminum allows for a broadening of the formal vocabulary offered by stone, in particular, through cantilevering.
