Alex Katz (b. 1927) is an internationally acclaimed American artist and is regarded as one of the most important and influential artists of our time. Katz is known for his bold, optimistic, direct, hard-edged figurative portraits and landscapes. Many of his works are among the most recognizable images in contemporary art. This is a momentous year for Katz, who is celebrating his 95th birthday. Meyerovich Gallery has a 35-year history of exhibiting paintings, works on paper, and cutouts by Katz. The Gallery’s current exhibition, “Alex Katz: Happy 95th Birthday!”, showcases an extensive selection of his most recent works. The subjects of these large to mid-sized works include colorful and black and white portraits, dancers, human figures, multi-colored still-life and vibrant flowers. These artworks are created by the artist using an assortment of complex mediums. The artworks on display at the gallery feature new releases such as the bright and seductively elegant portrait, “Straw Hat 2” 2022 (55 x 42 inches), as well as a signature example of the artist’s work, “Blue Umbrella 2” 2020 (38 x 52 inches). This portrait features his wife and muse, Ada, in bright hues standing under a blue umbrella in the rain looking calm and confident.
