Jeannie O’Connor: Embedded Narratives

Sep 2 — Oct 16, 2021

Artist’s Reception September 18th, 1-4 pm

Jeannie O’Connor works from her Magnolia Street studio, not far from Transmission Gallery, often photographing the neighborhood, rich in complex urban realities. Other subjects take her farther afield, to burned out California landscapes or far away travels.

While some photographic series remain strictly that, O’Connor takes certain photos into the studio to further develop the imagery, often incorporating architectural elements and also beautifully blurring the line between painting and photography in a layered exploratory approach that defies categorization.  Embedded Narratives includes several of these pieces, recent and early de-silvered mirror and mixed media works focused on locations from Oakland to India, eloquent and intriguing.

O’Connor’s long exhibition record includes many solo shows, international exhibitions and an extensive history of fellowships, awards and publications. Of special note, she was awarded the SECA award by SFMOMA and the Phelan award in Photography.

Her work is in the collections of the Bibliotheque Nationale, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, the Bancroft Library  and many private collections.
