Rena Bransten Gallery is pleased to present Book project: a silent conversation, our first exhibit with multi-media artist Yen-Hua Lee. This installation of small works on paper is part of an ongoing series in which Lee draws on the pages of antique books she has collected. Through the stories found on the book’s pages, Lee imagines a silent conversation with writers of the past as she offers to these pages her own visual narratives. An interest in sequencing and the passage of time draws her to the medium of books, though in this context each page offers its own story – there is no beginning and no ending. Dealing with memory and ideas of home both real and imaged, these saturated ink drawings are both playful and somber, and reminiscent of the way written words, whether spoken or read, slowly congeal in our minds to create images.
Originally from Taiwan, Yen-Hua Lee graduated in 2002 from the National Art University of Taiwan. She received an MA from the University of Dallas in 2004 and an MFA in 2007 from Northern Illinois University. She is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships and her work has been shown internationally in over 25 solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions, including shows at the Dallas Contemporary, TX; National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan; China Ceramics Museum; Inside-out Art Museum, Beijing, China; Katonah Museum, NY, Chelsea Art Museum, New York, NY; Korean Culture Center, New York, NY; Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan; Taiwan Yingge Ceramic Museum; and Aomori Contemporary Art Centre, Japan.
