Reflecting on her early years in the emerging California Funk Art Movement of the 60’s and 70’s Maija Peeples-Bright recalls, “It all intrigued me, I started making my own Universe, And No One Stopped Me!
Transmission Gallery is pleased to host just a little bit of that universe in Eternal Flaming Flames, featuring paintings and ceramic works spanning five decades by Maija Peeples-Bright.
Perhaps it was an escape from her challenging childhood as a Latvian refugee, the groove of San Francisco in the 60’s or simply a free-spirited nature that led her to the outpouring of flora and fauna that is the hallmark of her work. Charming, outrageous, densely populated and gorgeously colored, Maija’s peaceable kingdom companions bloom and cavort in clay and paint, exploring canyons, caves and mountains resplendent with spiky detail and glittering scallops.
