**Offsite exhibition at Cushion Works, 3320 18th Street, SF**
Fries With That…? is the grammatically ham-handed question posed in fast food restaurants encouraging diners to add yet another item to their trays. The fact that the question is highly unlikely to be asked in an art gallery is all the encouragement required for Cushion Works to do so. Assembled by guest curator Jeffrey Fraenkel, Fries With That…? opens at Cushion Works, 3320 18th Street, San Francisco, on Friday, March 8 and continues until Jordan Stein, the gallery’s proprietor, has had enough.
Drawn largely from the more unorthodox depths of Fraenkel Gallery’s holdings, the exhibition is comprised of works that would not fit comfortably in any exhibition not titled Fries With That…?Among the works to be included are E.O. Goldbeck’s 1925 panorama of a Texas baptism; a French albumen print from 1857 comparing the knee joint of a human with that of an animal; a color portrait of a suburban couple on the handsomely designed poster for Errol Morris’s 1978 documentary Gates of Heaven; a 1960s gelatin-silver print of a snaggle-toothed hippo, mouth open next to a chessboard; an unaccountably compelling 1938 press photograph of a gas explosion at the corner of San Francisco’s Buchanan and Grove streets; T. Glendenning Hamilton’s 1933 study of the T’Zan Teleplasm; and several anonymous photographs of french fries.
