Founded in 1996, Jenkins Johnson Gallery is a national dealer of contemporary art representing international artists working across disciplines. A member of the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) and the San Francisco Art Dealers Association, owner Karen Jenkins-Johnson brings over 25 years of experience to the gallery’s exhibition program. The gallery’s San Francisco space is located in the Union Square area and has operated for eighteen years in its original location at 464 Sutter Street. The gallery’s New York space was located off The Highline in the heart of New York’s Chelsea art district.
The gallery is committed to working with museums, private institutions, art collectors and other dealers to progress the careers of the artists it represents. The gallery exhibits the work of established 20th century masters including Gordon Parks and projects with the Estate of Roy DeCarava. The program includes critically recognized mid-career artists including Lynn Aldrich, Nicolas Africano, Ben Aronson, Lalla Essaydi, Scott Fraser, Patricia Piccinini, Nancy Switzer, Skip Steinworth and Polixeni Papapetrou. The gallery also represents emerging artists such as Annie Kevans, Julia Fullerton-Batten, Timotheus Tomicek, Kenyatta A. C. Hinkle, Rin Johnson, and Vanessa Prager.
Gallery artists are in the collections of, and have been part of exhibitions at, many museums around the world. Their works have been widely published as artist monographs, in art journals, and among critical theory texts. Reviews of the galleries’ exhibitions have appeared in the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, The Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, ARTnews, Art in America, The New Yorker, The Huffington Post, The Art Newspapers, SFWeekly, and ArtInfo, among many other publications. The gallery has promoted its artists at international art fairs including AIPAD, The Armory Show, EXPO Chicago, Paris Photo Los Angeles, Miami Projects, Art Miami, Art Platform Los Angeles, Volta NY, Pulse New York, and artMKT San Francisco, among others.
Karen Jenkins-Johnson received an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley and her BA from the University of Puget Sound. She sits on the Board of internationally acclaimed Alonzo King Lines Ballet. Ms. Jenkins-Johnson is a former President of the San Francisco Art Dealers Association. She has organized numerous events to benefit the arts community, including: Art Gallery Week (10 Days: 36 Galleries) in San Francisco and Oakland October 2 -13, 2012; several art walks in San Francisco and Chelsea.
