Eleven new etchings by New York sculptor Leonardo Drew are on view in the gallery at Crown Point Press during the month of March. Drew created the work for this exhibition in a two-week period last summer, working with printers in the etching studio on the Crown Point premises. The exhibition is accompanied by a video (also available online) showing the artist developing the plates in the studio and speaking about his art.
Two of the etchings are very large, with dimensions approximately three by four feet. All these new works have extremely rich and varied surfaces, taking advantage of the physicality inherent in the etching process. Striking blues or deep blacks dominate, but two of the smaller images are, by contrast, printed in graphite using the subtle layered technique called chine colle. Drew worked in the Crown Point studio experimentally, manipulating materials to develop surprising textures.
Crown Point Press is hosting a reception for the exhibition on Thursday, March 24th, from 6-8pm where the artist will be present.
