Christopher Robin Duncan SEASONS
21 June through 29 July 2023
Opening Reception: Wednesday 21 June, 5pm to 7pm

Rebecca Camacho Presents is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by Oakland based multi-disciplinary artist Christopher Robin Duncan. Marking a second presentation at the gallery, Duncan debuts an ensemble of two- and three-dimensional objects mapping the passage of time and its inherent aftermath.

Rooted in the observation and application of natural elements, such as the sun, the moon and the ocean as conceptual and compositional prompts for both visual and sound-based media, Duncan has historically operated parallel practices, adjacent to and informed by but siloed from one another. His most recent works shift these boundaries, cross-pollinating time-based exposure paintings with an immersive audio experience.

Titled SEASONS, the exhibition centers on a suite of four sound paintings; winter, spring, summer, and fall. Each season represented by a distinct hue, the paintings capture the patterns of sunlight created as UV rays meet and interact with their pigmented surface material. Those exposures are then encased in hand-crafted wooden speakers that play Duncan’s new limitededition full-length vinyl record, also titled SEASONS. The speakers are placed on pedestals wrapped in complimentary exposures with artisan wooden bases. As with the exposure coloration, the type and tone of wood shifts from season to season. The resulting regal forms are striking sculptural combinations that elicit a multifaceted sensory response. Informed by utilitarian art & craft as well as fine art and musical frisson, Duncan expertly captures the beautiful ephemerality of time and environment.

The exhibition also introduces a duo of cast bronze wall works and a series of sun and moonscape exposures.

A small publication of poems and stories related to seasons and the SEASONS LP, recorded at The Space Program SF, engineered by Maryam Qudus and mastered by Chuck Johnson. edition of 100, compliment Duncan’s installation. Writers include Vanessa Kaufman Zimmerly, Liz Harris, Felica Atkinson, Micheal Kang, Nkiruku Oparah, Zoe Brezsny, Frankie Haines, Griffin McPartland, Colter Jacobsen, David Benzler, Rachelle Rahme´, Kate Sweeney, Cedar Sigo, and Brie Ruais. The publication was produced by LAND AND SEA, the events space, book press and record label that Duncan runs with his wife Maria Otero.

Christopher Robin Duncan earned his BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts and his MFA in Art Practice from Stanford University. He has exhibited nationally and internationally for two decades and is included in the permanent collections of the Berkeley Art Museum, Berkeley CA; the Kemper Art Museum, St. Louis MO; the Museum of Modern Art, New York NY; the Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento CA; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco CA.
