Established in 1991, Catharine Clark Gallery exhibits the work of contemporary artists. A wide range of media is represented in the gallery’s program with an emphasis on content driven work. The gallery has pioneered the presentation of new media art in San Francisco, and is the first commercial gallery in the area with a dedicated media room. Exhibitions are hosted on a six-week schedule and generally feature one or two solo artist presentations, in addition to media room installations. The gallery program has garnered critical attention from numerous publications, including The New York Times, Artforum, Flash Art, Tema Celeste, Art in America, Artnews, Modern Painter, and Art Review, and gallery artists have exhibited at many national and international institutions, such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the de Young Museum, the Serpentine Gallery, The Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Queensland Art Gallery, The Contemporary Art Museum in Houston, and the McKinney Avenue Contemporary in Dallas. In 2010, Catharine Clark Gallery opened a pop up space in a residential apartment in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood (313 West 14th Street, 2F, between 8th and 9th Avenues). Exhibits, performances and installations of gallery artists’ work are presented at the New York location several times a year.In September 2013, Catharine Clark Gallery moved to a newly renovated space at 248 Utah Street between 15th and 16th Streets in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood. The gallery’s new location is a former door factory that was redesigned by Los Angeles-based architect Tim Campbell. This new location is within the neighborhood of the San Francisco Design Center and Showplace Square. Catharine Clark Gallery is suited among venues such as California College of the Arts (CCA), CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, and the Museum of Craft and Design in addition to several contemporary fine art galleries.
