K. Imperial Fine Art is pleased to present Visible Regularities, its second solo show of the work of Missy Engelhardt. This new body of work is a continuation of her strategic manipulation of the inherent structure of paper via sculptural mark-making. She builds volume by scoring the material and subtracts by vanishing the material with bleach. She considers it a collaboration with the material resulting in a metamorphosis of the paper and a record of the physical encounter with the object. Relying on the nuances of natural repetition, each mark empowers the next. “My work as an artist has always been the same way. Every manipulation is strategic but not forced. Planned out, but not restrained and it dictates each following mark, ultimately generating a repetitive cadence while establishing textures, patterns, and regularities.” Like patterns in nature, the works in this show are wild, unique, and have a mind of their own.
Missy Engelhardt received a BFA from Sonoma State University and her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Engelhardt has exhibited at San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, San Jose, CA; Root Division, San Francisco, CA; Somarts, San Francisco, CA; Horton Gallery, Delta College, Stockton, CA; and numerous art fairs. Missy was featured in New American Paintings #105 and is a recipient of the Harold E. Weiner memorial fund courtesy of San Francisco Art Institute and the Murphy Cadogan award courtesy of The San Francisco Foundation. Missy was an Adjunct Professor of Sculpture at Sonoma State University in 2016 and 2017 and has been a part of Sonoma State’s Visiting Artist Lecture Series. A native of Lodi, CA, Engelhardt has returned to her roots after having her first daughter.
