Anglim Gilbert Gallery is pleased to present In Situ: Traces of Morandi, an exhibition of new photographic works by Catherine Wagner.
In Situ: Traces of Morandi is the culmination of a two-year residency in Bologna, Italy where
Catherine Wagner had the rare opportunity to work in the studio of Giorgio Morandi. Museo
Morandi and MAMbo have invited other contemporary artists to make works inspired by
Morandi at MAMbo including Tacita Dean and Rachel Whiteread. Wagner was able to study
Morandi’s process and his still lifes while working in situ at his studio and constructed
installations with the objects specifically to be photographed. Wagner abstracted these forms
both formally and conceptually using colored gels that correspond to the spare but present
colors often overlooked in his paintings. She further abstracted the subjects through repetition
and the ephemeral nature of shadows. In photographing an inherently immaterial, intangible
interaction with light, Wagner made ethereal images in which solid objects appear elusive,
caught in the vibratory aura at the edge of a shadow. Anglim Gilbert will present a selection of
works from Wagner’s one person show at MAMbo which was open from March 25 – October 8,
2017.
